Cutlery Sets
Cutlery Sets
The cutlery you reach for every day should feel good in the hand and hold up to the dishwasher, night after night. Our dishwasher-safe 16-piece stainless steel sets do both, sized for a table of four and finished in four colours to sit right with your dinner set. Find the finish that suits your table, and set it properly from tonight.
Flatware, cutlery and silverware: The difference
You'll see the same thing called a few different names. Cutlery is the Australian term; flatware is what it's called in the US; silverware once meant actual sterling silver but now gets used loosely for all of it. They all mean the same knives, forks, and spoons, so however you search, you're in the right place.
Understanding the stainless steel cutlery grade
The grade stamped on a set is really two numbers, chromium and nickel, and they decide how bright it stays and how well it resists rust over years of washing:
- 18/10: 18% chromium, 10% nickel. The brightest shine and the best rust resistance, and the most hard-wearing of the three.
- 18/8: 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Nearly the same strength and shine, holding up well to daily use and regular washes.
- 18/0: 18% chromium, no nickel. Easier on the budget, with a slightly softer shine and a little less resistance to rust over time.
Each product page notes the grade, so you know exactly what you're bringing to the table.
FAQ
Absolutely. Our cutlery sets are crafted from stainless steel that's designed for easy cleaning, making post-meal tidying a breeze. The chromium layer protects against moisture and corrosion — even after repeated dishwasher use.
If by “better” you mean resists rust, feels good in your hand, and survives the dishwasher apocalypse — then yes, stainless steel cutlery is the reigning champion. It’s the gold standard for everyday use because it balances durability with design.
Choosing cutlery isn’t just about eating, it’s about how it feels in your hand and looks on your table. Here's what to keep in mind:
- Feel the weight: Like your cutlery light and nimble or solid and substantial? Pick what feels natural in your hand, not like a gym workout.
- Match your vibe: Sleek and modern? Go for matte black or minimalist stainless steel. If you're looking for something more classic, cutlery with curves or detailing brings the charm.
- Count your crew: Hosting often? A larger knife, fork, and spoon set (think 16+ pieces) saves you from the mid-dinner fork scramble.
- Think maintenance: If you’re not a fan of handwashing, choose dishwasher-safe stainless steel cutlery sets with no fancy finishes.
- Test the grip: Sounds odd, but some handles can get slippery. Look for ergonomic or textured handles if you want a better grip.
- Stick to your budget: From premium to practical, there’s a spoon and fork set for every price point — style doesn't have to break the bank.
Pro tip: Get one every day set you love using and one fancier set that makes dinner parties feel a little bit magical.
Every set here is 16-piece stainless steel, sold complete as a service for four: four dinner knives, four dinner forks, four dinner spoons, and four teaspoons. Buy by the set rather than the piece, and you're covered for a full table from the first dinner.
We don't sell individual pieces, serving utensils, steak knives, or kids' cutlery, and there are no silver, matte black, or bamboo-look lines; just stainless steel, matched to Castlery's dinnerware range.
Sizing is simple: count the seats at your table, then match the set. Here's the quick guide:
- 16 pieces: A service for four, right for a couple or a small household's everyday table.
- 24 pieces: Covers six, the comfortable middle for a family that has people over now and then.
- 32 pieces: Seats eight, for a bigger household or one that hosts a full table often.
- 48 pieces: Covers twelve, for regular entertainers and the meals where everyone comes.
If you host often, size up. A little spare cutlery beats the mid-dinner scramble for a clean fork.
Here's where each piece goes for a standard table setting:
- Forks to the left: The dinner fork sits to the left of the plate, napkin tucked under it or folded on top.
- Knife and spoons to the right: Dinner knife nearest the plate, blade turned inward, with the dinner spoon just beyond it.
- Teaspoon above: Rest the teaspoon across the top of the plate, or on the saucer if there is one.
- Glass above the knife: Your drinking glass sits just above the tip of the knife.
Good cutlery earns its keep three meals a day, so it has to feel right in the hand and survive the dishwasher. Ours is built for exactly that, the everyday table and the occasional dressed-up one:
- Built to survive the dishwasher: Stainless steel with a chromium finish that shrugs off wash after wash without dulling or spotting, the pieces you use daily stay looking new.
- A complete set for the whole table: Every set includes a knife, fork, dinner spoon, and teaspoon per setting, coordinated as one, so there's nothing missing to hunt down and no mismatched drawer collection.
- Four finishes to match your table: Pick the one that reads best against your dinnerware and glassware, everyday enough for a weeknight, smart enough for holiday hosting.
Dry your cutlery straight after washing, especially the knives. Water spots and rust patches usually form when droplets sit on the steel and evaporate slowly, or when hard-water minerals build up over time. Avoid long soaks in a full sink, and load knives blade-down in the dishwasher basket so pieces do not knock against each other mid-cycle. If a spot does form, dabbing with a soft cloth and a drop of white vinegar lifts most surface marks.
