Dining benches (and more recently, banquettes) are also popular in Singapore, especially for families or frequent hosts: they seat more people in a smaller footprint and slide fully under the table when not in use.

Chair widths are typically around 45 cm, so use that as your guide when working out how many fit comfortably around your table. A 120 cm table seats four; 160 cm seats six. If you're using armchairs, factor in the extra width, or consider mixing armchairs at the heads with armless chairs along the sides. It's a combination that looks considered and gains you an additional seat or two.
