The difference comes down to height. Counter stools are typically designed for counters and kitchen islands around 90 cm high, while bar stools suit taller bar tables and counters closer to 105 cm. As a rule of thumb, leave around 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the underside of your counter so nobody ends up eating dinner with their knees at chin level.
Start by measuring the height of your kitchen counter or island, then subtract 25 to 30 cm to find the ideal seat height. For most homes, counter stools with seat heights around 60 to 67 cm work best. If you have a taller entertaining area or built-in bar, a taller bar stool around 70 to 77 cm is usually the better fit.
Swivel stools are easier to get in and out of, which is useful around a busy kitchen island where people are coming and going. Fixed stools tend to be more compact, slightly more stable, and better suited to tighter spaces or a cleaner, more architectural look. Neither is objectively better.
