A kitchen bar stool is one of those deceptively considered purchases. Too low and it's awkward. Too high and nobody sits there. The right one, though—the right one quietly becomes the seat everyone reaches for. Our bar stools and counter stools are designed for homes that get properly lived in, with supportive silhouettes, easy-to-clean upholstery, and materials that can handle everyday wear without looking tired by month three.
From sleek leather finishes to warm timber frames and bouclé textures worth cancelling plans for, there's a kitchen bar stool for every setup. Choose low-back or adjustable designs for compact spaces, or upholstered counter stools for longer sits where conversations outstay dinner. With heights suited for standard counters (63–66 cm) and bar heights (71–76 cm), these are the seats that quietly make the kitchen everyone’s favourite room.
The difference comes down to height. Counter stools are typically designed for counters and kitchen islands around 90 cm high, while bar stools suit taller bar tables and counters closer to 105 cm. As a rule of thumb, leave around 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the underside of your counter so nobody ends up eating dinner with their knees at chin level.
Start by measuring the height of your kitchen counter or island, then subtract 25 to 30 cm to find the ideal seat height. For most homes, counter stools with seat heights around 60 to 67 cm work best. If you have a taller entertaining area or built-in bar, a taller bar stool around 70 to 77 cm is usually the better fit.
Swivel stools are easier to get in and out of, which is useful around a busy kitchen island where people are coming and going. Fixed stools tend to be more compact, slightly more stable, and better suited to tighter spaces or a cleaner, more architectural look. Neither is objectively better. It comes down to how the stool will actually be used and how much your household enjoys a spin.
Solid wood (oak, walnut, ash) ages well and handles daily use without looking tired. Upholstered seats add comfort for longer sits, though a wipe-clean performance fabric or leather makes more sense near food. Powder-coated steel is hardwearing and suits a more industrial or contemporary kitchen. The honest answer: the best material is the one that holds up to how your household actually lives, not the one that photographs best.
