Australian mattress sizes differ slightly from other countries, so knowing yours is key. Common sizes are: Single (≈ 91.5 × 190 cm), King Single (107 × 203 cm), Double (138.5 × 190 cm), Queen (152.5 × 203 cm), King (183.5 × 203 cm), and Super King (203 × 203 cm). When choosing fitted sheets, always check both the width/length and the pocket depth, because mattresses with toppers or pillow-tops can be much thicker than you think.
Depth matters. In Australia, a lot of standard fitted sheets come with pocket depths of 40–50 cm, and some go even deeper (up to 60 cm) for tall or top-topped mattresses. A good rule of thumb: your fitted sheet’s pocket depth should be ~5–10 cm more than your total mattress height so that the elastic can grip securely.
There are a few common culprits:
- The sheet might not be deep enough for your mattress, so it can’t grip properly.
- Elastic only at the corners (vs all around) significantly reduces the staying power.
- And yes—sheet clips or fasteners (sometimes called sheet suspenders) are a surprisingly effective hack.
