6 Ways to Style Round Dining Tables

Castlery|Mar 20, 2024

Round dining tables have become increasingly popular due to their versatility and ability to foster a sense of intimacy among diners.

Whether you have a small breakfast nook or a spacious dining room, there are numerous ways to style round dining tables that can transform your space into a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing area.

In this article, we will explore various styling ideas to help you make the most of your round dining table.

6 ways to decorate your round dining table

Choose a centrepiece

The centrepiece is a key element in styling your dining table, as it serves as a focal point and can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your dining space.

Choose a centrepiece that complements the table's style and the overall theme of your dining area. For example, if you’re going for a sleek and simple centrepiece, consider a single vase of fresh flowers or a minimalist sculpture. In a farmhouse-themed space, incorporate other elements such as a woven basket or mason jars with wildflowers.

Use tableware and linens

Often overlooked, tableware and linens can significantly change the look of the space!

Choose tableware that matches the style of your dining table by coordinating colours, patterns, and materials. For formal settings, classic white or fine china is often a safe choice, while for casual settings, you can experiment with other colours and patterns. Use placemats, table runners, or a tablecloth to add texture and dimension to the table.

Think about seating arrangements

You might wonder why seating arrangements are part of table decoration, but it can certainly affect the way your dining area looks and feels.

For instance, if you’re a believer in feng shui dining room principles, having an even number of chairs is the most ideal for balance and harmony. The placement of these chairs also makes a difference as a person’s back should not be facing an entrance.

Additionally, the number of seats can affect your table decor, such as the tableware you’re setting out or the number of placemats - they should be in line with the number of seats at the table.

Add lighting

Lighting not only impacts the ambiance and mood of the dining space but also creates a more functional space.

The size of the lighting fixture should be proportionate to the size of your table and the room. As a general rule, the diameter or width of the fixture should be approximately half to two-thirds the width of the table. For instance, if your round dining table is 122cm in diameter, consider a lighting fixture with a diameter between 61cm and 81cm.

Consider a chandelier of hanging pendant light above the dining table to add a stylish flair to the space.

Place a rug

Placing a rug under your round dining table can help delineate the space and create a focal point, especially if you have an open floor plan.

Measure the space to determine the appropriate rug size. Ideally, the rug should extend beyond the edges of the table and chairs, allowing enough room for chairs to be pulled in and out without catching on the rug. A common rule of thumb is to select a rug that extends at least 61cm beyond the edges of the table.

Opt for rugs that are easy to clean, such as synthetic blends or outdoor rugs with stain-resistant properties.

Spruce up the space with plants

Plants add a touch of nature and freshness to your dining space, so don’t forget to place them on the dining table and in the space.

Place a potted plant as the centrepiece on your round dining table. A decorative pot with various flowers, succulents, or a thin vase with a single flower can breathe some life into the space. But make sure that the plant doesn’t obstruct diners’ views or conversations.

If your dining area has additional surfaces, such as a sideboard, consider placing plant arrangements there as well. This adds greenery without taking up valuable dining space.

For small spaces, consider suspended plants, such as macramé hangers or wall-mounted planters, to make use of vertical space around the dining table.

Round dining tables offer endless possibilities for styling and personalising your dining space. By following these tips, you can create a dining space that not only looks inviting but is practical. Experiment with these ideas, mix and match styles, and let your creativity shine as you create a dining space that suits your lifestyle.
