The traditional three-piece suite is not for everyone. These days it can be more of a style statement to choose your sofa and free-standing chairs separately. Or, if you really want to make the most of the space in your living area, you can also choose an L-shaped sofa. This adds an extra section to one end of the traditional sofa design, creating more seating space and generally enough room for two people to lie down at the same time. It doesn’t take up as much space as a sofa and free-standing chair combination and creates a natural conversation hub in the home. L-shaped couches also come in a choice of design styles, from traditional corner shapes, to chaise sofas and sectional sofa designs.

An L-shaped couch can work in both large and small spaces. In small spaces it can be space saving, eliminating the need for a separate chair while still offering ample seating. In larger areas it can be combined with other furniture, with a central coffee table fitting naturally in the space created by the L shape. Rugs can also be a good addition, again being a natural fit for the L shape. You can also add colour and texture by using cushions and throws to pick out tones from around the room. It’s also worth thinking about the material of the sofa itself, with velvet sofas and leather sofas offering a more luxurious option to traditional fabrics.

The L-shaped sofa provides extra seating, meaning you can get away without other chairs in smaller spaces. Side tables rather than central coffee tables can also help you to save space. However, in larger rooms you can still team the L shape with free standing chairs to create a real conversation space. A larger central coffee table can also enhance this idea.

In a smaller space, an L-shaped couch can be a great way to add seating but save on space. The L-shape naturally lends itself towards creating a conversation area, as well as being ideal for TV viewing.

You can either have the couch up against a wall or you can put other storage behind it such as bookshelves, a sideboard or more. Essentially it is more or less the same as any conventional sofa.

Some L-shaped sofas are designed as whole or complete units. Others are sectional, which means they can slide apart if not secured using the appropriate fixing systems. These are often built into the design.
