FAQ
The best floor lamp depends on how you want to use the light. Arc floor lamps are useful for casting light over sofas and seating areas, while torchiere floor lamps direct light upward for softer ambient illumination. For reading, choose a task or adjustable floor lamp that directs light where you need it. A sculptural floor lamp can also work beautifully when you want your lighting to pull double duty as decor.
Most floor lamps are around 58 to 65 inches tall, although the ideal height depends on your room, furniture and how you plan to use the lamp. Beside a sofa or armchair, the shade should generally sit around seated eye level or slightly above it, particularly for reading. For ambient lighting, a taller lamp can help spread light more broadly throughout the room. Always consider the scale of your furniture and ceiling height so the lamp feels proportionate rather than oversized or lost in the room.
Start with the places where you actually need more light. Beside a sofa or reading chair is a natural choice, particularly if the lamp is being used for reading or other focused activities. A floor lamp can also brighten a darker corner, sit behind a sectional or help create a more layered lighting scheme. Keep the lamp close enough to the seating it serves and make sure its footprint does not interfere with walkways or everyday movement.
Style a floor lamp as part of your furniture, not as an afterthought. Place it beside a sofa or armchair to create a cozy reading corner, or use one to brighten an empty corner and add height to the room. Choose a floor lamp that complements your existing furniture through its material, finish or silhouette. An arc lamp works well over seating, while a sculptural design can act as a statement piece on its own. For a layered look, pair your floor lamp with table lamps, overhead lighting and natural light to create warmth at different levels. Keep the scale in proportion to your furniture and leave enough space around the base for easy movement. The goal is simple: lighting that feels intentional, useful and completely at home.
