Everything you need to find a rug that works

The Ultimate Rug Buying Guide

A rug does more than fill a space—it defines it. The right piece pulls a room together, turning bare floors into something warm, textured, and lived-in. Getting there comes down to three things: size, material, and style. From soft bedroom rugs that greet your feet each morning to modern designs that anchor your living room, here's how to find the right rug for every corner of your home.

Rug sizes: Finding the right fit for your space

Rug size can change the entire feel of a room. Too small, and your furniture can look disconnected. Too large, and the rug can overwhelm the space. The right size should frame your furniture arrangement while leaving enough room around the edges to keep the space feeling balanced.

5' x 8' rugs: For smaller, more intimate spaces

A 5' x 8' rug (or 153 x 244 cm) is a versatile choice for compact living rooms, bedrooms and smaller seating areas. In a living room, position it beneath your coffee table with the front legs of your sofa and chairs resting on the rug. This helps visually connect the pieces without requiring the rug to cover the entire seating area.

7.5' x 9' rugs: A little more room to gather

When you want more coverage without going oversized, a 7.5' x 9' rug (or 229 x 274 cm) gives your seating arrangement extra breathing room. It works well beneath a sofa, coffee table and accent chairs, helping define the conversation area while keeping the furniture visually connected.

9' x 12' rugs: For spacious, fully anchored layouts

A 9' x 12' rug (or 274 x 366 cm) is made for larger rooms and generous furniture arrangements. With enough surface area to accommodate a sofa, chairs and coffee table, it can anchor the entire seating area and create a more cohesive, considered look. For larger spaces, aim to have most or all of your seating furniture sit comfortably within the rug's boundaries.

Choosing the right rug for every room

Each room asks for something different: A rug that fits both the furniture and the feeling you want it to evoke.

A rug placed beneath a bed.

Softness is key. Think plush wool, viscose, or even silk-blend rugs that feel luxurious under bare feet and add warmth to your sanctuary. They invite slow mornings, barefoot stretches, and a sense of calm that sets the tone for the day.

The rug can either sit under the bed entirely, or minimally extend past the sides and foot of the bed. If you can still feel the floor when you get off your bed, it’s too small.

Bedroom rugs

This is where life happens: lounging, coffee spills, and barefoot marathons. Opt for durable, low- to medium-pile materials like wool or synthetic blends that can handle traffic while keeping cosy underfoot. Patterned or textured rugs can hide wear and stains, giving your living area personality without constant upkeep.

Also, pick one that’s big enough so the front legs of every sofa and armchair land on it, not just the coffee table.

Practicality meets style. Low-pile wool, polypropylene, or jute rugs withstand chair movement, spills, and high traffic while staying elegant. Choose easy-to-clean materials and textures that resist stains so your rug survives dinner parties without drama.

Your dining room rug should accommodate both the dining table and fully pulled-out chairs, so no one ends up half on the rug and half off.

Choose a rug that complements your space

Once you've narrowed down the right rug size and placement, it's time to think about how you want it to look and feel. Colour, pattern and texture can all change the mood of a room, so consider your existing furniture, finishes and overall design style before choosing.

Pick the right rug material that fits your household

Not every rug material performs the same way. Some are built for comfort, while others are designed to handle spills, pets and plenty of foot traffic. The right choice depends on how your household lives, how much wear the rug will see and which room you're shopping for.

A wool area rug in a beige color.

Wool

Best for: Comfort-first living rooms, bedrooms, or cosy corners

Plush and springy, wool holds its shape and feels as good underfoot as it looks. Wool works across low- and high-traffic spaces, with natural shedding that settles down over time.

A performance rug in a gray tone.

Performance

Best for: Kids' rooms, pet-friendly homes, and easy-clean durability

Made with durable synthetic fibres or wool blends, performance rugs handle spills, damp paws, and constant movement—ideal for rooms where something is always happening.

A jute area rug.

Jute

Best for: Outdoors or high-traffic areas like hallways and dining rooms

Made from natural plant fibres, jute rugs bring raw texture and neutral tones into the home. They’re durable, low-shed, and well-suited for any space with a little more traffic.

What’s your rug style?

Some rooms want a rug that disappears into the background. Others want one that's the first thing you notice. There's no single right style—just the one that matches how you want the room to feel, whether that's quiet, storied, or loud.

Neutral

Neutrals are a timeless classic. Already have bold furniture somewhere in the room? A neutral rug won't fight it. Or if you just want a base that won't need replacing every time your style shifts, neutral keeps things flexible.

Pop of colour

Is your room mostly beige, white, or wood-toned? Consider adding a pop of colour with a rug to bring in personality and vibrancy without repainting the walls or replacing furniture you already love.

Heritage

Want pattern without committing to a trend that'll date in five years? Heritage designs—worn-in medallions, vintage-inspired washes—are a classic that's already stood the test of time. It's the pick for rooms that want character and a bit of history.
