Footstools & Pouffes
Footstools & Pouffes
Footstool are the easiest way to make your living room feel finished: a softer place to land your feet, a spare perch when friends drop by, or a steady surface for a tray. Choosing one is mostly about proportions. For smaller spaces, a compact pouffe or low footstool tucks in neatly and keeps walkways clear. For larger sofas, go wider so it sits comfortably in front of the seat and doesn’t look like an afterthought. Think about how you’ll use it day to day, too. A firmer top is great for trays, while plusher fills suit lounging. Upholstery choices like leather or performance fabrics help with spills and scuffs, and solid timber legs add stability. Style-wise, match the lines to your sofa for a pulled-together look.
FAQ
A footstool is the multitasker of the living room. Most people buy one for a more comfortable lounge setup (feet up after dinner), then end up using it for everything else too: an extra seat when guests pile in, a spot to rest a tray, or a soft “landing zone” for a book and a throw. If you’ll use it with a tray often, prioritise a flatter, firmer top. If it’s mostly for kicking back, a plusher top feels better day to day.
Matching can look clean and intentional, especially if you like that “set” feel. But it’s not a must. In real homes, mixing often works better because it adds depth. A simple rule: match one thing, mix one thing.
- Match the leg finish or silhouette, but choose a different fabric texture.
- Match the colour family (warm neutrals with warm neutrals), but shift the tone slightly for contrast.
- If your sofa already has a lot going on (pattern, strong colour, bold shape), go quieter with the footstool so the room doesn’t feel busy.
Size is mostly about proportions and pathways. You want it to feel “paired” with the sofa, not like a tiny add-on or a bulky obstacle.
A few practical checks:
- Width: For larger sofas, a wider footstool looks more balanced. For smaller layouts, a compact pouffe/footstool keeps the room easy to move through.
- Height: Aim for a footstool height that sits close to your sofa seat height so your legs rest naturally (not awkwardly up or down).
- Clearance: Leave enough space so you can still walk around it comfortably and open drawers/doors nearby.
If you’re torn between two sizes, choose the one that keeps your main walkway clear. You’ll feel it every day.
If you’re tight on storage or you like a tidy reset in under a minute, a storage footstool earns its keep. It’s perfect for throws, spare cushions, remotes, kids’ toys, and all the little living-room things that never seem to have a home. Two things to think about:
- How you’ll use the top: If it doubles as a tray surface, look for something that feels stable and doesn’t dip too much under weight.
- How often you’ll open it: If you’ll be in and out daily, you’ll appreciate easy access and enough interior space to be actually useful (not just “technically storage”).
