KonMari® Consultant Shares How to Declutter Your Bedroom

Castlery|Mar 20, 2024

Creating a calm and organised bedroom is essential for a restful night's sleep and a peaceful start to your day. However, with our busy lives and accumulated belongings, bedrooms can easily become cluttered and chaotic.

Clutter not only affects the physical space but can also negatively impact your mental well-being.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the mess in your bedroom, don't worry! We've got you covered with these helpful tips and tricks from Dr Aparna Chari Sundar of Global Mindful Journey using the KonMari® method to declutter your bedroom and create a serene space.

This article features Dr Aparna Chari Sundar, Singapore’s first Platinum-certified KonMari® Consultant and Professional Home Organiser of Global Mindful Journey. She shares her expert tips on how to create a peaceful home environment using mindful organising strategies.

What is the KonMari® method?

We’re sure you’ve heard of Marie Kondo. The KonMari® Tidying Method is Marie’s intentional living approach to simple yet effective tidying. Using a unique selection while decluttering, you should choose what sparks joy to you. This method teaches you to choose items that speak to your heart so that you’re always surrounded by things that you love the most.

5 KonMari® decluttering tips

Create a ‘joy-metre’

Being trained by the renowned tidying expert herself, Dr Aparna shares the same sentiment as Marie - that your feelings know what sparks joy and are the standard of decision-making.

This is why Dr Aparna’s first advice on getting started with decluttering your bedroom is to learn how to establish your very own ‘joy-metre’. Using this foundational KonMari® method, ask yourself ‘Does this spark joy?’ when tidying and choosing your items.

These may be items like your favourite sweater, a cosy blanket, or even sentimental items like photographs or gifts. This joy-spotting exercise helps you identify between what you love and what you need so you can decide whether to discard or keep your items.

Establish the bedroom as a recharging space

Another tip Dr Aparna shared to help with decluttering is to establish your bedroom as a recharging space. Make your bedroom a sensorial space and refresh yourself by surrounding yourself with joyful objects, like fresh bedding, a comfortable bed, and plants.

Consider keeping lighting soft and calming, such as opting for warm lights or dimmer switches. Use soothing colours and textures in your bedding and bedroom decor, such as soft blues or earthy tones, and plush fabrics like cotton or wool. This helps with maintaining a clean, calm, and clutter-free space in the long term.

Make use of storage wisely

To create storage that uniquely sparks joy, Dr Aparna shares that you should keep items with low-frequency use like duvet covers and bedsheets away. Look for creative ways to optimise storage space, such as using storage under the bed, investing in storage bins, or adding shelves to keep items off the floor.

“Further, use compartmentalised storage boxes to group these items into pillow sheets, duvet covers, and bedsheets.” This keeps things organised and helps to find them easily the next time you need to change your bedding.

It’s also advised to store like-items together, such as keeping all bedding in one place, all coats on one side of the wardrobe, and all socks in the same drawer.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should stuff as many items as your storage allows! As you’re going through your belongings, sort them into piles that you want to keep or discard. Again, using the KonMari® principle, be honest with yourself about what you truly need and use. You can also consider donating lightly used items to charity or selling them for some extra cash.

Learn proper folding techniques

While folding may not be the most exciting task, don’t underestimate the power of proper folding techniques in decluttering your bedroom!

“Learn the famous KonMari® vertical folding method to not only use existing space more efficiently but also access and put away items with ease”. This method involves folding your clothes in a specific ‘origami’-like way to keep them neat and of similar size. This helps to maximise space and allows you to see all your clothing at a glance.

Practice gratitude daily

Practicing gratitude is a simple but powerful way to improve your mental well-being and cultivate a positive mindset. Incorporating a daily gratitude practice into your bedroom routine can be a great way to start and end your day on a positive note.

This can be doing simple things like writing down what you’re grateful for, or even displaying photos or objects in your bedroom that remind you of things you’re grateful for.

“Learn how to care, respect, and show gratitude to your bedroom to help motivate you to live in a peaceful and calm environment,” says Dr Aparna.

Decluttering your bedroom can have a significant impact on your mental and emotional well-being. By incorporating these tips shared by Dr Aparna, you can transform your bedroom into a peaceful and organised space. Remember to take your time to be intentional with the decluttering process and don’t be afraid to let go of items that no longer serve you!
