Genuine leather, particularly full-grain and top-grain, is a natural hide that develops character over time rather than deteriorating. It ages with patina, looks better the longer it is used, and can outlast most other upholstery materials by decades. Faux or bonded leather costs less upfront, but tends to peel, crack, and fade within a few years—especially in conditions where UV exposure and heat do their worst. If you're buying a piece you want to still love in ten years, genuine leather is the more honest investment.
- Full-grain leather: This is the outermost layer of the hide, untouched and unprocessed. It's the most breathable, most durable, and develops the richest patina.
- Top-grain leather: This leather is sanded slightly for a more uniform surface and better stain resistance, making it genuine hide that is still high quality, just more processed.
- Bonded leather: This is made from leather scraps combined with synthetic materials, it may look the part when new but tends to be less breathable and less durable over time.

Vacuum regularly to lift dust and skin oils before they work into the surface, then wipe down with a small amount of mild soap and water. For conditioning, every six to eight weeks is a reasonable cadence, and pay particular attention to armrests and headrests, which see the most contact with skin and hair. Avoid harsh chemicals that break down the leather's protective surface and cause discolouration or cracking.
Contrary to popular belief, yes. Genuine leather doesn't trap pet hair the way upholstered fabrics do, and spills can generally be wiped away before they set. The caveat is claws—scratches on leather are real and, depending on the hide, can be visible. If your household includes a determined cat, a protected or corrected-grain leather (which has a more resilient surface coating) will hold up better than a raw, aniline-dyed hide. The trade-off is some of that natural softness and patina, but your armchair will thank you.
