FAQ
Start with the areas that need more light. Beside a sofa or armchair is ideal for reading and relaxing, while a darker corner can benefit from a floor lamp that spreads softer ambient light. You can also position one behind or beside a corner sofa to create more visual depth. The key is to think about what the space needs rather than simply filling an empty corner. Floor lamps can provide task, ambient or mood lighting depending on their design.
For reading, choose a floor lamp that directs light towards your book or seating area. Adjustable reading lamps or designs with movable heads give you greater control over where the light falls. A dimmable floor lamp is even more versatile, letting you use brighter light for reading during the day and a softer glow when you are winding down at night.
Start with what you need the light to do. A standard floor lamp can provide general illumination, while a task lamp is better for reading or focused activities. Uplighter designs can help spread light around the room, while sculptural floor lamps can add visual interest even when switched off. Consider the size of your sofa, room and available floor space too. The right floor lamp should feel proportionate to its surroundings, not like it wandered in from another house.
Place a floor lamp where you naturally spend time, such as beside a sofa, armchair, or reading nook. For a more layered look, pair it with table lamps or overhead lighting rather than relying on one light source. Choose a design that complements your furniture through its shape, material or finish. A sculptural floor lamp can also double as a statement piece, while a simple design can quietly brighten an overlooked corner.
