How to choose a duvet?

Just like mattresses, fitted sheets and bed frames, duvets come in a choice of different sizes, so you need to make sure you choose a suitable size for your bed. They also come in different thicknesses, with warmer duvets being more suitable for the colder times of year. These warmth and thickness grades are known as Tog ratings, with lower numbers being more suited to higher temperatures – and vice versa. The material used to fill the duvet also has a big impact on the feel, with goose down generally providing a softer and more responsive feel than synthetic fillings.

How to match bed lined to your duvet

Just as duvets come in different sizes, so does the bed linen that goes on top to act as a cover. In order to get the right size bedding for your duvet, check the label on the side. There are standard sizes of bedding (as there are for mattresses) including single, double, king size and super king size, which may also help you to work out what size bedding you need. Bedding covers usually slip over the duvet and are fastened using either a zip, buttons or toggles.

The advantages of a duvet?

The duvet has several key advantages over other forms of bedding. Not only can it offer a higher level of comfort and warmth but it can also help to cut down on cleaning, as you don’t need to clean the duvet itself that regularly. Simply change the quilt covers and pillowcases when they need washing. This also offers up a world of possibilities in terms of color scheme and overall design opportunities, as a change of bed sheets can completely alter the look and feel of your bedroom.

There is a lot of confusion about the differences between a duvet and a comforter, and it does depend a little on where you are in the world. However, in general, they are the same except a duvet is designed to go inside a bed cover but a comforter is a stand-alone item that you sleep under.

What is a duvet insert called?

The part that is inserted into the bed covers is called the duvet. Duvets that are not covered with sheets but made to be used as they are presented are called comforters. However, in different parts of the world these distinctions can be a little blurry.
